George L. Fields, Jr., an advisor for IGI, has more than 40 years of experience in managing and conducting complex white collar and financial investigations. In over 20 years with IGI, Fields has conducted cost-effective and time-sensitive international and domestic due diligence and background inquiries on behalf of corporations, banks, and hedge funds that are recruiting senior-level executives and other high-profile employees for key positions of responsibility. His background research efforts regarding client’s adversaries have included individuals involved in hostile takeovers, short sellers, renegade employees, and individuals previously associated with suspect hedge funds.
Fields joined IGI after heading the Criminal Investigation Division for the District of Columbia’s Office of Tax and Revenue. In that capacity, he recruited, hired, and managed Special Agents responsible for investigations involving tax fraud, identity theft, and other violations of law impacting tax administration. He coordinated the Division’s investigative actions with the DC Office of Integrity and Oversight, the D.C. Office of the Inspector General, the DC Office of General Counsel, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
Prior to leading the Criminal Investigation Division for the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue, Fields held several positions within the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division, including serving as the Head of the Office of Tax Crimes. His last position with the IRS was as the Principal Assistant to the Deputy Director of the National Operations Division where he was responsible for formulating policy, developing procedures, and providing program guidance on all tax crimes, including fraud in the areas of health care, insurance, and gaming, as well as public corruption. Fields also served as the IRS’s liaison to the Undersecretary of Enforcement at the U.S. Treasury Department and to Congress for matters pertaining to criminal tax issues.
Fields has helped to develop and teach courses in ethics and workplace sexual harassment at the Josephson Institute of Ethics. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Fields has significant experience in a variety of areas, including:
- arranged and managed expeditious investigative efforts in 38 countries regarding over 140 corporate entities being considered by client for correspondent relations;
- assembled and managed multiple teams of former federal investigators required to quickly review quality and thoroughness of U.S. government investigative activities critical of client’s internal business security protocol;
- conducted on-site investigations in multiple countries to assist client in determining advisability of establishing business relationships with foreign manufacturing entities;
- vetted potential owners of a sports franchise for a major sports league;
- assisted prominent international known beauty supply business in internal theft investigations and development of security protocol; and
- conducted due diligence investigations for a prominent family office investment business to provide information to support their risk and return calculations.
